biography
a graduate of the michaelis school of fine art at the unversity of cape town, frances sanders is a talented young artist whose paintings celebrate an overt pop art aesthetic. according to sanders: 'i'm trying to create beautiful, jewel-like pieces of candy that your eye can lick, suck and enjoy. i don't have political, social or feminist messages in my work; i aim to make something aesthetically pleasing. and i can't help but be influenced by pop culture. i'm obsessed with the visual. art has many different roles and i want the emotional use of colour to draw people in and play.' sanders is busy working towards a highly anticipated solo exhibition at obert contemporary in johannesburg later this year. elements of this show will include the projection of sound through a series of silk screen prints that explore synergies between audio and visual art.
